Eric Snodgrass, Principal Atmospheric Scientist at Nutrien, will present an outlook at what the weather could look like for this upcoming growing season for Colorado and the corn belt.

“Record setting rains defined 2019, while flash drought, a derecho, 30 tropical cyclones, and western wildfires dominated weather headlines in 2020. Now in 2021, drought risk plus another potentially active hurricane season are front of mind. Weather variability is the largest source of risk in production agriculture and each year brings a new set of challenges to manage that risk throughout the growing season. In this talk, we will discuss how weather patterns (i.e., El Nino/La Nina, Polar Vortex, MJO, etc.) influence the growing season. We will talk about weather factors in other major production regions like Brazil and look at long-term trends impacting total productivity around the world. We will learn about advancements in technology that are leading to increased predictive skill, but we will highlight the known limits of predictability and how to interpret long-range forecasts. We will finish with a forecast for the remainder of 2021,” said Snodgrass.

Our second speaker will be Fred Raish, Agronomy Sales Manager/Regional Supply Coordinator for CHS, who will provide some insight into the chemical and fertilizer situation farmers will face this season.

Fred Raish is a fifth-generation Coloradan who grew up on the Western Slope chasing cattle and sheep and enjoying the San Juans. After working as an applicator, a supervisor for Yuma County Pest Control District, and a Western U.S. Manager for Alligare, LLC, Fred went to work for CHS, Inc in 2018 as the Agronomy Sales Manager. Since starting with CHS, Fred’s role has expanded to the Regional Supply Coordinator for the Southern Region, which covers CO, NE, KS, and TX.
